Strengthen Energy Security: Add 10 Million Tonnes of Pellets in the EU

Strengthen Energy Security: Add 10 Million Tonnes of Pellets in the EU

Bioenergy Europe has published a new op-ed in Euractiv, titled "Strengthen Energy Security: Add 10 Million Tonnes of Pellets in the EU," authored by Gustav Melin. The article was published by Euractiv on 23 March 2026.

The piece makes a clear case: if Europe is serious about reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, it must accelerate the deployment of renewable solutions that are already available, scalable and compatible with existing energy needs. In that context, sustainable wood pellets can play a practical role in strengthening the EU’s energy security while supporting climate objectives.

In the op-ed, Gustav argues that increasing pellet use in the EU would help replace part of the fossil gas still used across the heating and energy system. At a time when Europe remains exposed to geopolitical instability, price volatility and supply risks linked to imported fossil fuels, homegrown and readily tradable bioenergy offers a more resilient path forward.

He also underscores that pellets are not a future option awaiting maturity. They are already part of Europe’s energy mix and can be mobilised quickly through existing technologies, infrastructure and supply chains. This makes them particularly relevant for delivering near-term results while the wider energy transition continues.

Beyond energy security, the article highlights the broader value of sustainable bioenergy for Europe’s competitiveness. Expanding pellet production and use can support rural economies, strengthen European industry and make better use of available biomass resources within a circular economy approach.

The central message is simple: Europe should not overlook solutions that can deliver now. Adding 10 million tonnes of pellets in the EU would be a concrete step towards lower fossil fuel dependence, greater resilience and a more secure energy system.
