Exploring the Nordic Pellet Market at the Nordic Pellet Conference 2025

Bioenergy Europe was happy to contribute to making the Nordic Pellet Conference 2025 a success. Svebio’s annual event took place in Stockholm, on January 28th-29th, and represented a great opportunity to understand the latest developments in the Nordic and global pellet market.

The Conference opened with a set of site visits tailored on the participants’ interests, offering a practical glimpse into innovative projects and real-world applications of pellet technology. Bioenergy Europe’s Membership Director Manolis Karampinis visited the district heating facilities of Norrenergi, which operates in the Solna and Sundbyberg municipalities, just outside Stockholm.

In recent years, approximately 99 % of the energy used by Norrenergi heat production comes from waste heat and pellets, which are made from wood residues, milled to wood powder at the plant, and used in large burners. Norrenergi used 64,000 tons of wood pellets in 2023 and is planning to install one more pellet burner in its facilities. The experience from Norrenergi showcases how wood pellets can be effectively used as fuel for district heating systems located in urban environments, where space limitations are a major consideration.

Day one of the conference focused on the pellet market, policy developments and updates in the latest innovations shaping the sector. On the second day, Bioenergy Europe joined a session focusing on the contribution of pellets to the heating sector and their expanding uses in industrial applications. Manolis Karampinis provided a comprehensive overview over the EU policies influencing the pellet markets, such as the Renewable Energy Directive, the European Deforestation Regulation, the new Ecodesign proposals for solid fuel boilers and stoves, and others.

With more than 120 registered participants, the Nordic Pellet Conference reinforced its role as a key forum for the pellet sector in Scandinavia and Europe and inaugurated a new year of bioenergy / pellet conferences.
