Bioenergy Experts Converge at Expobiomasa 2025: From EU Policy to Market Insights

On May 6th Bioenergy Europe joined the Expobiomasa 2025 in Valladolid, Spain, for its latest edition. The 3-day trade fair brings together innovative bioenergy solutions and experts from all over Europe and Latin America. In addition, Expobiomasa features a parallel programme of technical workshops, with the 2025 edition featuring more than 50 experts from industries and institutions.

The inaugural session of the conference on 6th May was opened by Javier Diaz, President of Avebiom and Alejandro García Pellitero, responsible for environmental affairs of the city of Valladolid. Mr. Pellitero presented the plans of the municipality to build a 49 MW biomass-fired plant. Fueled with sustainable wood chips, from nearby forests, the plant will provide renewable and cost-effective heat through a district heating network to 30,000 local inhabitants. Jean-Marc Jossart, Secretary General of Bioenergy Europe, gave a keynote presentation on the main EU files relevant for bioenergy, with a focus on the most recent updates on RED and Ecodesign and Energy labelling. Finally, he presented the current state and outlook of bioenergy within the evolving EU policy landscape, highlighting the importance of a bottom-up approach advocacy in maintaining a positive view of the bioenergy sector on the EU agenda.

The following session was a pellet market roundtable in which Manolis Karampinis, Membership Director at Bioenergy Europe and General Manager of the Europe Pellet Council, joined sector leaders from Spain to analyse current dynamics in the Spanish and European pellet markets. The panel explored topics such as the current status of the market and the expectations for next heating season, the measures that can be taken to encourage the pellet sector, the interaction between the electrification trend and pellets, and a comparison between the situation in Spain and other European markets. In his statements, Manolis Karampinis mentioned EU policy files that are impacting the pellet sector, such as EUDR and the Green Claims Directive, and highlighted how the pellet sector can position itself as an ally and enabler of the electrification trend.

Finally, Manolis Karampinis opened a session sponsored by Veolia entitled “Bioenergy: the key to a sustainable and decarbonized industry in Spain” with a presentation on the role of biomass and bioenergy to defossilise industrial processes. Manolis highlighted the recent developments in the Clean Industrial Deal and analyzed the potential and expectations of industrial sectors such as cement, lime, steel, chemicals, and food industry regarding the use of bioenergy and biomass.

The 3 days conference was a great opportunity to connect with stakeholders and experts, primarily from Iberia but also from all over Europe. The discussions, once again depicted a fast-shifting landscape, stressing the importance of in-depth policy knowledge and continuous engagement
