Bioenergy Europe attends the Progetto Fuoco Fair – Sustainable Low Emissions Wood Stoves

Bioenergy Europe’s Policy Director Irene di Padua presented the proposed requirements and changes in the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations, exploring the impacts they may have on the European bioenergy sector.

Progetto Fuoco, Verona, 28 February-2 March

On Thursday 29th of February, Bioenergy Europe was at Progetto Fuoco fair, in Verona, Italy, to present the latest updates on Ecodesign and Energy Labelling regulations. Bioenergy Europe believes that the active participation of the sector both at national and EU level will be key to achieve actionable provisions.

Bioenergy Europe’s Policy Director Irene di Padua presented the proposed requirements and changes in the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations, exploring the impacts they may have on the European bioenergy sector.

The Ecodesign Regulations set emissions limits allowing products to be commercialised in the EU market. The thresholds for Solid Fuel Boilers and Solid Fuel Local Space Heaters are expected to be revised to include new provisions on energy efficiency and emissions. The revisions are expected to be postponed by 2025 and Bioenergy Europe is closely following the regulation activities to ensure actionable provisions.

The Energy Labelling Regulation has been in place since 2018, it provides a ranking for appliances’ efficiency, that can influence consumers’ behaviour. The suggested changes include an alignment of calculation methods with Ecodesign and propose to merge air-to-air heat pumps and solid fuel local space heaters in a single label. Bioenergy Europe highlighted that the merger could cause confusion for consumers, bringing together appliances that cannot be compared, and consequently penalising the use of biomass local space heaters.
