Bioenergy Europe Highlights Role of Certification in Scaling Carbon Removals at CO2 Capture, Storage & Reuse Conference
Copenhagen, May 2025 – Bioenergy Europe’s Senior Policy Officer, Ennio Prizzi, delivered a presentation at the CO2 Capture, Storage & Reuse Conference hosted by Fortes Media Group, outlining the importance of establishing a robust and credible framework for carbon removals in the EU.
Prizzi’s presentation focused on the EU’s ongoing work to develop the Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (CRCF), a key piece of legislation aimed at certifying high-quality carbon removal activities, particularly those from biogenic sources such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
He provided an overview of:
- How the EU policy landscape is shaping the CRCF and laying the groundwork for a functioning carbon removal market.
- The next steps to develop strong, science-based methodologies under the CRCF.
- The critical importance of ensuring additionality, long-term storage, and environmental sustainability to build market confidence and ensure carbon removals contribute credibly to the EU’s climate neutrality goals.
“The CRCF is a crucial tool for unlocking investment in carbon removal solutions,” said Prizzi. “But its success depends on the credibility and transparency of the methodologies it supports.”
In addition to sharing Bioenergy Europe’s perspective, Prizzi engaged with leading experts and innovators in carbon management from across Europe, reconnecting with long-standing peers and expanding collaboration on climate innovation.
Bioenergy Europe will continue to advocate for a science-based, transparent, and investable carbon removal framework that supports the deployment of sustainable bio-based solutions.
