Bioenergy Europe and Stûv host DG ENER for technical exchange on Ecodesign and Energy Labelling
On 21 May, Bioenergy Europe and Stûv welcomed representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) to Stûv’s facilities for a technical exchange on the ongoing revision of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements for solid-fuel local space heaters.
The visit offered an opportunity to bridge policy discussions with the technical realities of appliance design, testing and performance assessment. Through exchanges with technical experts, Commission representatives gained first-hand insight into how modern biomass heating appliances are developed, tested, and continuously improved to enhance efficiency and environmental performance.
Discussions focused on several elements currently under consideration in the legislative process, including their practical implications for environmental performance, technological development and consumer access to affordable, efficient heating solutions. The exchange also explored how future requirements can remain ambitious while reflecting technical feasibility and real-world operating conditions.
As the revision of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements progresses, constructive and technically informed dialogue between policymakers and industry remains essential. A well-designed regulatory framework can support innovation, provide regulatory certainty to manufacturers, and help accelerate the replacement of outdated, more polluting heating systems with cleaner, more efficient technologies.
Modern biomass heating systems play an important role in Europe’s heating transition, particularly in supporting the deployment of renewable heat and the decarbonisation of buildings. Future requirements should therefore promote innovation and technological progress while remaining proportionate, innovation-driven and accessible to consumers seeking reliable and affordable heating solutions.
Bioenergy Europe thanks the representatives from DG ENER for their engagement and the Stûv team for hosting this valuable exchange. We remain committed to fostering constructive dialogue between policymakers and stakeholders to support informed, balanced and effective policymaking for Europe’s heating sector.
