Ensuring a Thriving European Bioeconomy

Ensuring a Thriving European Bioeconomy

The European Bioeconomy Alliance Outlines its Vision for Europe’s Bioeconomy

Today, the European Bioeconomy Alliance (EUBA) is proud to present its new video highlighting the pivotal role of the bioeconomy in advancing a climate-neutral, circular, and resilient Europe. The European Bioeconomy Alliance (EUBA) represents the key sectors active in the bioeconomy – agriculture, forestry, biotechnology, sugar, starch, vegetable oils, pulp and paper, bioplastics, renewable ethanol, and research & innovation.

The video follows the recommendations of the EUBA Bioeconomy Blueprint. The Blueprint, a collaborative effort by all the major bioeconomy actors, sets out a clear pathway for the growth of the bioeconomy and its critical contribution to the EU’s sustainability goals.

Today, the bioeconomy is already making a difference for EU’s growth, contributing €2.4 trillion annually to the EU economy and supporting over 17 million jobs across the continent. Moreover, by 2030, bio-based solutions could reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions by 2.5 billion tonnes every year, contributing to an essential step in the transition from fossil fuels.

To fully unleash the potential of bioeconomy, EUBA calls for 5 urgent actions:

  • Assign a ‘bio-coordinator’ at EU level.
  • Create a consistent and supportive regulatory environment that gives bio-based products a competitive advantage over fossil-based products.
  • Make the bioeconomy an integral part of EU-level framework and policies.
  • Ensure a sufficient budget for the future CAP and Horizon Europe to support farmers, forest owners and their cooperatives to invest and innovate.
  • Create incentives for bio-based products in strategic sectors.
