Heating decarbonisation – A synergic approach

Bioenergy Europe strongly supports the 2050 objectives of climate and carbon neutrality. To achieve these targets, it is essential to decarbonise the heating sector and modernise the current stock. According to the European Commission, buildings represent 40% of the EU’s energy consumption, with most of their energy still produced with fossil fuels. Thus, particular attention must be given to on-site and nearby renewable heat sources. The modernisation of old heating systems and the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy is pivotal to achieve Europe’s decarbonisation goals and improve air quality. A set of actionable measures will improve the chances to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and this requires:

• Decisive actions for the decarbonisation of the heating sector
• Maximising synergies between different EU policies
• A RED II promoting on-site and nearby renewable heat
• An EED where renewables and efficiency are mutually reinforcing
• An EPBD revision focusing on heating and cooling
