Where are you based?
We are based in Ghent, Belgium, where our specialized solid fuels laboratory has been serving clients for more than three decades. Our strategic location in one of Europe’s key industrial hubs allows us to efficiently serve customers across the continent and beyond.
What does your company do?
Bureau Veritas Ghent operates as a leading solid fuels laboratory with extensive expertise in analyzing all types of solid fuels including biomass, coal, coke, and petcoke. We provide comprehensive testing and certification services that help industries transition to more sustainable energy sources while ensuring quality and compliance with international standards.
What do you do?
As Quality Supervisor and Process & Production Improvement Engineer, I oversee quality assurance protocols and drive continuous improvement initiatives within our laboratory operations. Since joining Bureau Veritas in November 2019, I’ve been focused on developing new market opportunities that support global sustainability goals and waste reduction efforts.
How is your team structured?
Our experienced team combines decades of technical expertise with cutting-edge analytical capabilities. We operate with specialized technicians for different fuel types, quality assurance specialists, and business development professionals who work together to deliver reliable testing services and identify emerging market opportunities in the sustainable energy sector.
What value do your products and/or services bring to your customers?
Our comprehensive testing and analysis services provide customers with the critical data they need to ensure fuel quality, optimize combustion efficiency, and meet regulatory requirements. We help clients make informed decisions about fuel sourcing and processing, ultimately supporting their operational efficiency and sustainability objectives.
Do they contribute to sustainability, efficiency, or innovation?
Absolutely. Our laboratory plays a crucial role in the transition to sustainable energy by providing accurate analysis of biomass and alternative fuels, enabling companies to reduce their carbon footprint. We’re actively developing new testing methodologies for emerging sustainable fuel types, helping to unlock waste-to-energy opportunities and support the circular economy.
How does EU policy impact your business?
EU sustainability directives and renewable energy policies have significantly increased demand for our biomass testing services. The European Green Deal and RED III requirements have created new opportunities for us to support companies in meeting compliance standards and accessing renewable energy markets.
What key regulations influence your operations or growth?
The Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), Industrial Emissions Directive, and various CEN/ISO standards for solid fuel testing directly influence our service offerings. These regulations drive demand for certified testing services and create opportunities for us to expand our capabilities in emerging areas like torrefied biomass and waste-derived fuels.
What motivated you to join Bioenergy Europe?
After more than 10 years as a member, our relationship with Bioenergy Europe reflects our commitment to supporting the sustainable development of the bioenergy sector. The association provides valuable insights into market trends and regulatory developments that help us better serve our clients and identify new opportunities.
How does membership support your goals and industry engagement?
Membership keeps us connected to the latest industry developments and policy changes affecting the bioenergy sector. It enables us to contribute our technical expertise to industry discussions while staying informed about emerging testing requirements and market opportunities that align with our laboratory’s capabilities.
What’s next for your company?
We’re expanding our testing capabilities to support new sustainable fuel markets and waste-to-energy applications. Our focus is on developing innovative analytical solutions that help clients optimize their sustainable fuel strategies while meeting increasingly stringent environmental standards.
Any upcoming projects, innovations, or growth plans?
We’re investing in advanced testing equipment and developing new methodologies for analyzing emerging fuel types, including torrefied biomass and various waste-derived fuels. Our goal is to become the go-to laboratory for companies seeking to innovate in the sustainable fuels space while maintaining the highest quality and compliance standards.
