NextFuel is the clean successor to fossil coal. Our focus is on utilizing energy
crops and agricultural residuals, and we see the most relevant business cases
with raw material sources in subtropical regions. From our headquarters in
Stockholm/Sweden we partner with international project developers to whom we
license our patented solution.
NextFuel AB has a 100% subsidiary in Austria (NextFuel Technology GmbH),
operating the industrial R&D facility in Frohnleiten/Austria (inaugurated 2012),
based on torrefaction technology originally developed by Andritz. The core of
NextFuel’s technology is an indirectly heated rotary drum reactor, equipped with
patented devices to allow for highly efficient heat exchange. The reactor in our
R&D facility has a capacity of 1 ton output/hour, and for commercial purposes
the same reactor layout is scaled to approx. 8 tons output/hour. For densification
we use a briquetting press.
In 2017/18, the R&D facility was refurbished to allow not only for producing the
well-known torrefaction products (with energy content of 22-23 GJ/ton) but also
for higher torrefaction degrees (with energy contents up to 28 GJ/ton), which
may be required in special applications e.g. in the steel industry.
