In times of energy uncertainty, where the imported supply of energy is at risk, we need a reliable alternative.

Domestically sourced, affordable and sustainable - Bioenergy holds the key to our energy security. With an import rate of less than 4%, bioenergy maintains the autonomy of the EU's energy supply. The raw material for bioenergy comes mainly from residues from sustainable forest management practices and the wood-working industry as well as agricultural practices.

Rather than reverting back to fossil fuels, bioenergy offers diverse solutions including space heating in buildings, grid stabilisation, renewable power production, decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries and the deployment of new needed technologies like Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).

A more diversified and autonomous energy supply based on renewables is key for Europe's energy independence and green future.

As European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: The renewables are cheap, they are home-grown, they make us independent. We will deploy renewables this year that are an equivalent to round about 8 billion cubic metres. So, the renewables are really our energy insurance for the future.

Bioenergy is an integral part of a sustainable future because:

it provides energy security

it fosters rural development

it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions reductions

it increases forest resilience
