Moving Grate

Moving Grate

« Back to Glossary Index

A moving grate is a type of combustion technology used in biomass and waste-to-energy boilers for the efficient burning of solid fuels such as wood chips, pellets, or municipal solid waste.

It consists of a series of mechanically-driven, reciprocating or oscillating bars or sections that move the fuel slowly along the combustion chamber. This movement ensures that the fuel is evenly distributed, facilitating complete combustion and efficient heat transfer. Moving grates are particularly suitable for handling fuels with varying sizes and moisture content and can be found in biomass combustion plants that can be as small as for the heating of a larger household or apartment complex, all the way up to larger plants used to supply district heating networks, biomass power plants, or  industrial processes.
