Cereals are plants of the Poaceae family, also known as grasses. They are grown for their grain and are known for being rich in starch. Grains are mainly used for food and feed. They can also be used to produce energy and bio-based products.
- Starch (sugar) is mainly used to produce bioethanol (fuel) but also bioplstics, biosolvents and biosurfactants.
- Bran (protein-rich outer layer of grain) can be used to produce biosurfactants (detergents or surfactants).
- Whil broken grains are often unfit for human and animal consumption, they remain excellent for biomethanisation.
