Beets are biennial plants grown for their fleshy roots. There are different types of beets, having specific uses:

  • Sugar beets are grown for their high sugar content. Today they are mainly grown to produce sugar for food consumption. However, sugar from sugar beets can also be used in the bio-based industry and green chemistry, as it’s possible to produce platform molecules from sugar beets which can be used to produce bioplastics, ethanol (alcohol), bioethanol (biofuel) or biosolvent
  • Fodder beets are used to feed animals
  • Vegetable beets are used for human consumption.

Beets and/or their residues (tops, pulp, etc.) can be used in biomethanisation as these materials have a good potential to produce biogas.
