Ash
Ash refers to the inorganic residue that remains after the complete combustion of biomass materials, such as wood, agricultural residues, or energy crops. It consists primarily of minerals like silica, calcium, potassium, iron, aluminium and magnesium. Biomass ash may contain smaller amounts of so-called trace elements such as copper, zinc and cadmium.
The ash content is a critical factor in biomass fuel quality, as high ash levels can reduce combustion efficiency, increase maintenance requirements for boilers and stoves, and lead to operational challenges, such as slagging and fouling.
Proper management and utilization of ash, such as using it as a soil amendment or in construction materials, can enhance the sustainability of biomass energy systems.
