Bioenergy Europe Prepares Sector Input for Crucial EU Talks on Renewable Heating
On 19 November, Bioenergy Europe convened an ad-hoc Domestic Heating Working Group to prepare for the European Commission’s upcoming Consultation Forum on Solid Fuel Boilers, taking place on 8 December. This meeting is part of our ongoing work to support the sector ahead of the revision of the Ecodesign rules for boilers.
Why does this matter?
The upcoming implementing act will define which solid fuel boilers can be placed on the EU market for the next 10–15 years. With renewable heating playing a key role in Europe’s energy transition, ensuring that future requirements remain both ambitious and realistic is essential.
During the meeting, members reviewed the Commission’s provisional slides and identified several aspects that will require clarification. These will guide Bioenergy Europe’s intervention during the Consultation Forum, followed by written feedback to the Commission.
The Consultation Forum
Bioenergy Europe participated in the 8 December Consultation Forum, where we presented the sector’s preliminary views. We also have offered online participation slots to members.
During the forum the Commission presented several possible policy measures, some with potential devastating effects to the industry. Under the worst-case scenario, most solid fuel boilers would be pushed out of the market and an obligation to install an electrostatic precipitator would apply.
The Commission has given industry until the end of January to provide feedback.
Call to members
To prepare a coordinated reply, members need to provide feedback and additional data, figures or input by 12 January to help strengthen the sector’s contribution.
An ad-hoc Working Group meeting will take place on 19 January to present the consolidated feedback gathered.
A members-only service
The Domestic Heating Working Group is one of several technical and policy platforms open exclusively to Bioenergy Europe members, enabling companies and associations to directly shape EU energy policy discussions.
If your organisation works in the bioenergy or renewable heating sector and would like to take part in these exchanges, you can learn more about membership here: https://bioenergyeurope.org/join-us-now/
