The Biomass Counts campaign campaign was an initiative launched by Bioenergy Europe in December 2014. Despite bioenergy representing 60% of the EU’s total consumption of renewables, many decision-makers and citizens are not aware of the environmental, socio-economic, and geo-strategic potential of bioenergy or of its innovation capacity. This campaign set out to balance the discussions on biomass use through various practical examples. The second objective of the Biomass Counts campaign consisted of explicitly presenting the needs of the bioenergy industry to guarantee sustainable growth. This includes–among other things–the need for an EU strategy/action plan focused on the heating and cooling sector and for the definition of legally binding, EU-harmonised sustainability criteria.
