Bioenergy Europe Backs Clearer Rules for Green Claims & Carbon Removals
Brussels, 14 March 2025 – As the EU Green Claims Directive moves forward, Bioenergy Europe has joined a coalition of 33 organisations urging policymakers to ensure credible climate claims while enabling investment in carbon dioxide removal (CDR)—a key tool for reaching net-zero. Without clear guidelines, businesses may hesitate to engage with CDR, slowing progress on climate targets.
Key Priorities for the Directive:
Allow businesses to invest in CDR before net-zero to accelerate action and scale removals.
Apply the Like-for-Like principle so fossil fuel emissions are offset with permanent removals.
Ensure only high-quality, ex-post carbon removal credits are used in compensation claims.
A well-balanced directive can combat greenwashing while fostering a €220 billion carbon removal industry, creating jobs and reinforcing Europe’s climate leadership.
