As of Today, the EU Could Rely Until the End of the Year on Bioenergy Alone
Brussels, November 11, 2024 – On November 11th, the European Union celebrated its Bioenergy Day, marking bioenergy’s vital contributions to Europe’s economic resilience, energy security, and decarbonization goals.
As of November 11, Bioenergy Europe’s calculations indicate that the EU could potentially meet its energy needs for the remaining 49 days of 2024 using bioenergy alone. This milestone emphasizes bioenergy’s capacity to support Europe’s energy independence while contributing to its climate goals and fostering innovation in sustainable energy technologies, like bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
Commission’s Agenda: Where Does Bioenergy Stand?
As the incoming European Commission sets its goals in climate neutrality, energy security, and a new bioeconomy strategy, today’s Bioenergy Day serves as a reminder of bioenergy’s relevance in the EU’s agenda.
Today bioenergy is a valuable European industrial asset, supporting over 500,000 jobs across the Union and supplying 82% of Europe’s renewable heating. It strengthens local economies and offers new employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. Bioenergy is a leading European technology for the world, about 74% of bioenergy technology suppliers are based within the EU, showcasing Europe’s expertise in advanced green technologies and energy solutions.
“The Bioenergy industry is ready to deliver on the up-coming Clean Industrial Deal with its unique know-how and energy capacity. As Europe is set to strengthen the future of its industries, Bioenergy can step in, providing both a sustainable energy source and creating new opportunities for growth, making the EU’s economy more competitive and sustainable. ‘’ says Jean-Marc Jossart, Secretary General of Bioenergy Europe.
A Critical Ally in the New Mandate
With the celebration of Bioenergy Day 2024, Bioenergy Europe presents bioenergy’s role in reinforcing energy security, driving local economic growth, and creating green jobs, aligning with the new Commission’s priorities. By fostering bioenergy and other sustainable solutions, Europe takes a step towards a carbon-neutral future, reinforcing energy independence and building a resilient economy.
