« Back to Glossary Index

Moisture refers to the amount of water content present in a material, typically expressed as a percentage of the material’s total weight.

In biomass, moisture content is a critical factor affecting the efficiency, combustion behaviour, and storage stability of biomass fuels such as wood chips, pellets, and agricultural residues. High moisture content in biomass can lead to lower energy output during combustion, increased emissions, and difficulties in handling and storage, as well as higher transportation costs. Optimizing moisture levels is essential for improving the performance and cost-effectiveness of biomass-based energy systems.
